Unexpected Quilting Comment

I went to the dentist last week for my 6 month checkup. It's my first visit since moving to Florida so I had to fill out all the necessary paperwork. In the occupation field I decided to write "quilter." It just sounds so much better than "stay at home mom" or "not applicable." It's my favorite thing to do so why not list it.

After the hygienist took x-rays and asked all the typical dental questions, the dentist came in to introduce himself. This is what he said "Hi, I'm Dr. Chris, it's nice to meet you. So, I'm guessing you like to stitch in the ditch."  Add that to the list of things you'd never expect to hear your dentist say!

The hygienist's mouth dropped open and her eyes got really wide. I think she thought he said something suggestive and inappropriate but I just laughed. Then he told me that I had a dead tooth and needed a root canal. Yeah, not laughing anymore...

  1. Oh dear. That's not funny at all! Classic lead with the good line, punch em with the bad news! I hope it goes as well as it can.

  2. It makes me rethink my occasional urge to write something silly like 'trophy wife' on those forms.
I hope your teeth can be fixed without too much pain – physical or financial!

  3. That is neat that he knew something about quilting, but I am sorry to hear about your tooth.

  5. I was a little caught off guard when asked what I did for a living at a recent appointment. Truth be told, I'm not actually making a living. Thankfully, my husband is doing that so I can focus on my primary occupation: keeping my two kiddos living (and happy, and well-behaved, and all the rest). I'm sorry to hear about your tooth. My last dentist wanted to fill three of my teeth, so I went to a different dentist at the practice the next time who wanted to fill three teeth too, except two were the same and one was different. I decided to go to a different practice where they said I didn't actually have any cavities. Grief! I'm just glad I didn't let them do any exploratory drilling.

  7. Haha, this is too funny because I work at the dentist office and I looove when I have patients who are quilters!!!! I schedule extra time so we can chat:)....everyone knows if one comes through to send them to me! Hope your root canal went okay...not really so bad, only hear the horror stories usually.

  8. I always hate those questions on forms and usually leave them blank! What I do for a living has nothing to do with my teeth... (maybe I'd feel differently if I had an actual profession though). When I got married we had to submit our occupations which were then put on our wedding certificate and i hate it because it has nothing to do with marriage and i don't like the reminder of the job I was in at the time of getting married!!

That's pretty awesome he knew something about quilting though! It's funny we see these people as "scary dentists" and don't think about them having hobbies and interests out side of teeth lol.
