'Tis the Season!

It's the official start of the holidays. Time for some turkey and visits with family and good friends. It's also the time for all the crazy shopping frenzies which, thankfully, I don't take part in. I prefer to do a lot of my shopping through amazon just to avoid all the mayhem. I'm 90% done with my holiday shopping and I'm glad that I got the bulk of my holiday sewing done before now since I have to have foot surgery on Monday. It's going to lay me up for the month of December so it might get a little quiet here but don't worry, I'll be back and quilting more soon enough!

In the meantime, enjoy your time with you loved ones today on this beautiful Thanksgiving day. I have much to be thankful for and I hope you do too. Have fun trimming the tree, baking cookies, and finishing up your holiday projects in the coming weeks!

Show & Tell Thursday!

Amidst everything else going on I was able to finish the table runner and I'm excited to show it off! This is my first batik project and I love how it turned out.

I decided to free motion quilt the diamond pattern that I learned from the Dot to Dot Quilting class that I took on Craftsy. Of course, the best laid plans are always the first get derailed. I used King Tut variegated thread by Superior Threads. I've used it in the past but for whatever reason I kept having skipped stitches. I tried rethreading, rewinding the bobbin, different speeds, and playing around with the tension, all to no avail. In the end only half of the diamond patterns were done free-motion. The other half were done using my walking foot. Surprisingly, I could still quilt them almost as quickly as the others (since there wasn't the bother of stopping, ripping out skipped stitches, etc.) and I couldn't even tell you which ones were done free motion and which ones weren't. I'd consider that a win.

Sewing for a Cause

When I first learned that we were relocating to the Orlando area, the thing that excited me most was the opportunity to volunteer my time at Give Kids the World. Give Kids the World village is a 70-acre resort with over 140 villas to accommodate families from all around the world who have children with life threatening illnesses. They partner with wish-granting organizations to give these families week-long once-in-a-lifetime vacations where the focus is having fun going to all the places that the Orlando area has to offer like Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld. For many of these children it is a chance for them to focus on just being a kid, to laugh and smile and to not have to think about hospital stays, doctors, and treatments.

I first learned about this amazing organization when I met my husband 6 years ago and since that time we've both been huge supporters of GKTW, helping to raise money for them through various fundraisers especially Coasting For Kids.

I've been volunteering at the Village every week since the beginning of October and it's been such an amazing experience. In addition to the time I physically spend at the village helping out, I've also started sewing for them. During their stay at the village, each wish child receives a wish pillow. They're so easy to make and has such a huge impact for the child. Here is the batch that I made earlier this week when my son was napping:

If you'd like to make some wish pillows for Give Kids The World you can contact Rick at Give Kids The World or leave me a comment below and I will get all the information to you. If you are a no-reply blogger be sure to include your email address or or send me an email directly using the email button in the upper right hand corner of my blog. There is also a video tutorial that you can check out (but it doesn't include any of the shipping details). Okay, now to get back and make another set of pillowcases!

Basted & Ready To Quilt!

I finished piecing together this placemat earlier this week. It's now basted and just waiting to be quilted. I've been taking the Dot-to-Dot Quilting class on Craftsy and plan on using some of the techniques that Angela Walters demonstrates. I should have it done in no time!

Where'd My Comments Go?!

When I started this blog Google+ was already in full swing, but I was never quite clear as to the purpose of it. As far as I can tell, it just seems to cause more problems, like reverting my own profile to a no-name blogger and restricting people from leaving comments. The only thing that has kept me from ditching Google+ is losing all of my comments from all of you wonderful readers! Yep, if you look back through my posts now you won't see any comments and that makes me sad but I think this blog will be better off in the long run.

Farewell Google+. I don't think you'll be missed at all...

Funny How Life Takes Over

Life has been pretty busy here the last few weeks! I haven't gotten much sewing done lately but I'm starting to get back into the swing of things. Some goals for this week are:

  1. Get the backing for my Accuracy Quilt sewn up. I bought some coordinating fabric to go with the improv strips that I made from leftover fabric.
  2. Make a wish pillow for Give Kids the World (that's for another post soon!)
  3. Finish piecing this table runner together, made from some pretty batik charms:
