Practice Makes Perfect, But What Now?

Whenever I want to master a new free motion quilting technique, I need to practice. So I make mini quilt sandwiches and put thread to fabric. It gives me the confidence to try it on my real projects. That's the whole point of practice, I know. But what do you do with all of those practice quilt sandwiches? Anyone? They're truly just random doodling, each with different backing fabrics, different thread, and different patterns. It's not pretty my friends, especially my earlier practicing.

I hate the thought of just throwing them away but not sure what else to do with them. Since I have a house full of cats (okay, maybe 3 doesn't make a full house but sometimes it feels like it), I thought maybe I can figure something comfy to make for them. What do you do with your practice quilt sandwiches? I'd love to get some creative ideas.

  1. sadly, I just throw them away, which I know is not what you want to hear, lol! I also use my least favorite fabrics from my stash or buy cheap remnants that I don't love, so I don't have a problem tossing them!

  2. I toss mine too, unless it is big enough to make a doggie blankiet.

  3. as of yet not had a go at practising FMQ, seems a shame to throw them away and I am sure the cats would love blankets, both my daughters want them for their cats when I get round to it.

  4. I've been using insulbrite in my practice runs, that way I can at least use them for hotpads.
