Stash Bee - Gate Crashing Hive 7

This month happens to be my month to be queen bee for hive 4 of Stash Bee and since I don't have a block to make for anyone else, I've decided to gate crash hive 7 and make a block for Deana! It's the flowering snowball block and it's my first time curved piecing. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Cutting the fabric out took the longest and just remembering to sew slowly is key. I only had to redo one seam. I took my photo at night (which seems to be my only opportunity to sew these days) so the lighting wasn't the greatest and doesn't accurately reflect some of the fabric colors.

  1. How great to gate crash and learn a new technique. The block looks great - nice and smooth and flat!

    1. Well spotted, Yvonne. Mine seemed to have excess fabric around the edges in spite of my painstaking tracing and cutting. It wasn't so much to cause a problem, but I wonder what Diana did differently.

    2. On the seam that I had to redo, it as because it wasn't scant enough. The other thing I noticed was the way I pressed my seams. It laid flatter when I pressed the petal pieces (not the corner ones) flat. Oh, and the fact that I starched the crap out of the fabric every step of the way may have helped.

  2. Your block looks great, perfect piecing. I will admit that curved piecing still scares me.

  6. Oh I love that black and white sewing machine fabric! What a cool block; I bet it leads to some amazing diagonal patterns...thinking of all the diagonals I've seen thanks to Melissa Corry's Irish Chain hop! I have to tell you I followed your Pinterest page you provided the link to yesterday? the day before? This week is a blur...and thank you for the great tips in that post. :-)

  7. Bikes and sewing machines! Two of my favorites! That is a great block. I'm going to have to see if I can find a pattern for that to use as one of my guild challenge blocks. We are using the new black and white C&S collection and I think it would look great. Your curves are impressive. Hmmm, after rereading that I had better elaborate. The block curves that is. So far I've only seen your face so I'm not qualified to comment further.
